Building Block and Building Rule: Dual Descriptor Method for Biological Sequence Analysis

    Get PDF
The emergence of “Systems Biology” in recent years highlights the systematic viewpoint of bio-system modeling. Building on such a background, Dual Descriptor Method, a generic methodology for biological sequence analysis is proposed. From a systematic perspective, Dual Descriptor is defined as a two element set of Composition Weight Map and Position Weight Function which aim at reflecting the composition and permutation information of a sequence. An alternate training algorithm is provided to get an optimum description of the building patterns of the sequences. In this paper, dual descriptor method has been applied to the analysis of two typical problems of molecular biology: gene identification and the prediction of protein function. Satisfactory and insightful results are achieved. Owing to the generality of this methodology, dual descriptor method has wide application perspective for many problems of pattern recognition, especially those involved in “Systems Biology”

Parity of Anti-Decuplet Baryons Revisited from Chiral Soliton Models

We recalculate masses and widths of anti-decuplet baryons in the case of positive parity from chiral soliton models, provided that the member Ξ3/2\Xi_{3/2} of the anti-decuplet has a mass 1.86 GeV as reported recently. Calculations show that there are no convincing candidates for the nonexotic members of the anti-decuplet available in the baryon listings. Up to the leading order of msm_s and 1/NcN_c, the width formula for the decay of the anti-decuplet baryons to the octet depends only on SU(3) symmetry model-independently, except the coupling constant. Similarly we give a width formula for the decay of negative parity baryons belong to certain SU(3) baryon multiplet by pure symmetry consideration. By this formula, we find that if we have an anti-decuplet with negative parity and that the masses are the same as those given by chiral soltion models, the identification of N(1650) as N10ˉN_{\bar{10}} are inconsistent with experiments for N(1650)→NπN(1650)\to N\pi while the widths agree with other two decay channels involving strangeness. And Σ(1750)\Sigma(1750) seems to be a reasonable candidate for Σ10ˉ\Sigma_{\bar{10}}.Comment: 4 pages in revtex format, version for journal publication. Arguments revised, with conclusion unchange

Triplet with a doubly-charged lepton at the LHC

We studied the signatures of an electroweak SU(2) lepton triplet which contains a doubly charged heavy lepton. The most interesting and easily detected final states are originating from the doubly charged lepton pair and single production, that we analyzed at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV. We propose useful kinematic cuts to reduce the backgrounds and computed the integrated luminosity needed to discover or exclude the doubly charged leptons for various masses.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1105.5417 by other author

Doubly Charged Lepton from an Exotic Doublet at the LHC

We studied the signatures at the LHC of the electroweak SU(2) lepton doublet which embeds a doubly charged lepton. The doubly charged lepton pair and single production rates, which are different from the triplet case, are studied and all the detectable decay modes are considered. We also applied the same kinematic cuts as in triplet case to reduce the background at LHC and the needed integrated luminosities to find the doubly charged leptons with different masses are analyzed. We also suggested a method to distinguish the exotic lepton doublet and triplet.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figure
